FAQs on Cancer

faqs-on-cancer
The word cancer is derived from the Latin word for crab implying how the cancer can ‘’grasp’’ surounding tissues.
It is one word that evokes fear, stress and is equated to death itself. Well, that is not the case with modern developments in medical science.
Cancer is the growth of abnormal cells without any control or regulation of the growth. It has the potential to invade and spread to other areas of the body.

An unabated increase of a particular cell type mostly leads to death without treatment. In addition, the symptoms that it causes may be severe such as pain, obstruction, bleeding, malnutrition, and fatigue. These may be overwhelming both physically and mentally. With modern treatment many of these situations are manageable. Progress Gastrocare provides one of the best cancer supportive care in Chennai including medical and psychological support.

At the cellular level, mutation in some genes can lead to unregulated growth or a mutation in a tumor suppressor gene fails to prevent unwanted cell growth. These mutations could be the result of exposure to environmental toxins starting from UV light, radiation, genetic, food-related, chronic oncogenic infections, harmful chemicals, nonhealing wounds, etc. In many patients the exact cause is unknown.

The cancer spreads by 1) breaching the natural boundaries between neighboring tissues. So, it can compress or occlude the surrounding tissues which can lead to obstruction of the tube-like structures like intestines, blood vessels, respiratory passage, etc. It can also project into the lumen of such tubes to cause bleeding.

 2) by spreading along lymph channels to lymph nodes

3) by spreading via blood vessels and depositing and growing in distant organs (metastasis)

From early-stage cancers to complex and advanced cases, Progress gastro care, the best cancer hospital in Chennai is equipped to handle all stages and types of cancer.

Many cancers are curable. The term cure is generally used for the removal of cancer tissue that is detectable by tests. The first aim of cancer treatment is cure. In some, this may lead to the eradication of all cancer cells from the body.

At Progress Gastro Care the best oncology hospital in Chennai, our multidisciplinary approach ensures that patients receive a holistic and integrated treatment plan, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of these modalities.

The result of cancer therapy hinges on 2 main factors that are under our control - timely presentation of the patient to the doctor and adherence to treatment;  one factor not in our hands is the aggressiveness of the cancer which varies between various cell types and various organs. We at Progress Gastro Care provide the best cancer followup care by monitored clinic visits, reminders on tests and support group.

Cancer evaluation has 3 goals –

1) To confirm that it is cancer;

2) To know what is the type of cancer;

3) To know the extent of the spread of cancer (staging).

To confirm it is cancer, doctor may ask for tissue samples from the affected part (biopsy), blood tests (tumor markers), imaging tests (CT scan, MRI, PET scan, etc), or a combination of the above. Sometimes when tests are inconclusive cancer specialist will advise whether to repeat the tests or follow up.

To know what type of cancer it is, generally, the biopsy report will give an idea.  Subtyping and knowing the aggressiveness of cancer is also important in a few cancers. This may be done by studying the characteristics of the tissue using special tissue staining chemicals - called immunohistochemistry.

To know the extent of disease (staging), this is generally possible by getting CT, MRI scan, etc if the affected region of the body like the abdomen, head, limb, etc. A PET scan is generally a whole-body scan that shows areas of high usage of chemicals like glucose that are tagged with radioactive molecules. In some tumors, it may be necessary to rule out very small tumor nodules that may not be seen on imaging. For instance, in the case of the abdomen, this can be done by laparoscopy - directly looking inside the abdomen through small incisions under anesthesia, and if need be biopsy can be taken at the same time. In some tumors by applying Ultrasound close to the affected organ using Endoscopy (Endoultrasound), the extent of local spread can be known. The most common staging method is TNM which stands for Tumor spread, Node spread, and Metastasis (distant organs spread).

A biopsy is sampling a small bit of the affected area and studying it under a microscope. This can give an. the idea of the type of cells found and their level of resemblance to normal tissue (differentiation).  This biopsy can be taken by various methods - with a fine needle directly or with the guidance of Ultrasound or CT scan (percutaneous fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) or biopsy (FNAB)); by cutting through overlying tissues and then taking a sample from the tumor directly (incisional biopsy); the whole tumor may be removed (excision biopsy); these procedures are done painlessly.

One can use surgery to remove the tumor, use medicines or radiation to melt the tumor. Which of these is used or if combinations of the above are used depends on the cancer type, location, and general condition of the patient. Further other methods where the tumor can be treated by applying various forms of energy using different technologies like microwave, radiofrequency, laser, etc are available. Progress Gastro Care is the best oncology hospital in Chennai, offering exceptional medical care and cutting-edge treatments for patients with various types of cancer.

As we know that various combinations of treatment methods can be used, specialists belonging to the allied fields of surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, radiologists, and pathologist sit together to discuss an individual patient's condition and suggest the best course of treatment. Also, the follow-up of the effect of treatment is again discussed in such meetings. It is otherwise called a multidisciplinary meeting (MDM). Progress gastro care has the best team of oncologist in Chennai to manage gastrointestinal cancers.

A patient is free to choose any stream of medicine after knowing the pros and cons of the therapy. Disregarding allopathy based only on the pros of other streams or the cons of allopathy is not advisable. Allopathy is supported by strong data and is in line with modern science. Combining different streams of medicine is not advisable as the interactions of the medicines between the streams are not known.

Basically, after a multidisciplinary meeting among the various specialists, a treatment plan is devised. Tests to know the nature and extent of the disease as explained above are reviewed. A patient's fitness to undergo a certain therapy is assessed based on performance status (the general fitness of the patient in performing day-to-day activities) and heart condition (echo) and anesthetist evaluation in case of surgery. Some of the best oncologists in Chennai take care of gastrointestinal and liver cancers at Progress Gastro care.

In Surgery - more precise surgery while preserving surrounding organs is possible. In the abdomen, the workhorse of surgery is laparoscopy whereby major cancer surgeries can be done via small keyhole-like incisions. For selected complex cases, the help of robotic surgery can be taken.

In Medicines - Immunotherapy uses medicines that affect our immune system to fight cancer cells. These are generally used in combination with other chemotherapy agents. Personalized treatment – choosing a set of medicines based on the molecular profile of the tumor – has started.

In Radiation - Precision radiotherapy with special techniques like IMRT and photon therapy are now available. These can limit damage to surrounding tissues while delivering higher radiation to target cancer.

At Progress Gastro Care, the cancer hospital in Chennai our team of highly skilled oncologists, state-of-the-art facilities, and a patient-centric approach, we provide comprehensive and personalized care to ensure the best possible outcomes for cancer patients.
